Gujarat: Over 60 dead, several injured several feared trapped in bridge collapse

Guwahati: Over 60 people were killed and nearly 400 people have fallen into the Macchu river when a cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat on Sunday.

According to sources, the death count could go up as many are still feared trapped.

The incident took place in Morbi town, about 200 km from the state capital Ahmedabad, on the Machhu river.

However, local people and government officials have started their rescue operations.

As per sources, the bridge is a local picnic spot that sees huge crowds on weekends and other holidays.

Sources further said that a cable bridge was restarted five days ago after renovation.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation and has spoken to Gujarat Chief Minister and other officials regarding the accident.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his condolences over the incident. Taking to Twitter, Patel wrote, "I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy of Morbi. The state government will provide Rs 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured."
