Guwahati:The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to take disciplinary action against Akash Phukan, a BJP leader from Bokakhat, after an audio clip surfaced in which he allegedly uses offensive language against the state’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made it clear that if the audio’s authenticity is confirmed, the party will not hesitate to take strict action, as such conduct is unacceptable for any BJP member. The controversy escalated further when Advocate Ganesh Pegu filed an FIR at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati. The FIR accuses Phukan of spreading false information about Minister Ranoj Pegu, particularly claiming that he was favoring the Mising community, while also criticizing his performance. In the leaked audio, Phukan is heard insulting the education minister, accusing him of incompetence in managing the education department. He also stated, “Ranoj Pegu is not my leader; my leader is Himanta Biswa Sarma.” Phukan also alleged that BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa had taken ₹20 lakh from him, despite the MP’s claim of no such transaction. This issue is believed to stem from a dispute over a tender awarded to contractor Gobin Pegu to construct a bridge. Phukan claimed that his influence secured the tender but demanded a commission for it. When his demands were reportedly rejected, he resorted to harsh verbal attacks on Minister Pegu. The incident has led to outrage, with the Mising community issuing a ban on Phukan’s entry into their areas in Assam. Although Phukan has since apologized for his comments, he is facing intense backlash and is awaiting official action from the BJP.
