Assam hits landmark paddy procurement milestone for 2024-25
Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough for Assam's agricultural sector, the state has achieved its paddy procurement target for the 2024–25 season, marking a historic moment in its agrarian progress. As of June 8, 2025, a total of 5,85,012.75 metric tonnes of paddy have been procured, nearly meeting the government’s ambitious target of 5,85,500 metric tonnes.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement, hailing the achievement as a “watershed moment” for Assam’s farmers and the broader agricultural landscape. This is the first time in the state’s history that it has reached its full procurement target—a feat that underscores the success of ongoing reforms and targeted policies in the agriculture sector. The procurement drive, which began earlier this year, will remain open until June 30, 2025. With a few weeks still left, officials are optimistic that the final figure will surpass the original target, creating a new benchmark for future procurement seasons. The milestone reflects Assam’s deep-rooted dependence on agriculture and the government’s renewed focus on supporting its farming community. Improved procurement infrastructure, timely payments, and farmer outreach programs have played crucial roles in enabling this success.hief Minister Sarma praised the combined efforts of the state administration, procurement agencies, and farmers for making this possible. He emphasized that such achievements not only boost the morale of cultivators but also contribute to strengthening the rural economy.“This marks the beginning of a new era in Assam’s agricultural history,” Sarma stated. “Meeting the full procurement target sends a strong message of confidence and commitment to our farmers.”Agricultural experts believe this accomplishment could encourage higher participation in government procurement programs in the coming years. It may also lead to better price realization and enhanced food security for the state.
