Guwahati:In a stern response to the tragic killing of three wild elephants in Manas National Park on May 2, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro has strongly denounced the poaching incident and vowed strict action against those responsible.Labeling the event as "deeply disturbing," Boro emphasized that such acts of wildlife crime would not be tolerated under any circumstances. "This is a serious offence. The culprits will face the full force of the law. We are committed to ensuring that our wildlife is protected," he asserted.Boro highlighted the BTC administration's ongoing efforts to curb wildlife crimes in the region. He noted that poaching had significantly decreased in recent years due to continuous interventions by the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government. One of the notable successes includes the voluntary disarmament of many former poachers, who surrendered homemade guns and hunting equipment. These individuals were then given financial support to pursue alternative livelihoods, steering them away from illegal hunting activities. In addition to anti-poaching measures, the BTR government has been working actively to mitigate human-elephant conflict, a recurring issue in the region. Compensation has been provided to families affected by fatal encounters with wild elephants, aiming to build trust and cooperation among local communities.Boro also underlined the government’s broader environmental initiatives aimed at wildlife conservation and sustainable development. These include the declaration of Raimona National Park in the Kachugaon Forest Division and the establishment of the Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park in the Haltugaon Division of Kokrajhar district, both aimed at safeguarding biodiversity and promoting eco-tourism.Urging the public to become active participants in conservation, Boro appealed for community vigilance and collaboration. "Protecting our wildlife is a shared responsibility. We need every citizen to stand up and support these efforts to preserve our natural treasures," he stated. The BTC administration is currently coordinating with forest officials and law enforcement to investigate the poaching incident and apprehend the offenders.
