21 Manipur Lawmakers Urge Centre to Restore Elected Government Amid Ongoing Unrest
Imphal:In a significant political move, 21 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Manipur have collectively appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling for the immediate restoration of an elected government in the state. The appeal comes as Manipur continues under President's Rule, which was imposed on February 13, 2025, following a prolonged period of ethnic violence and instability. The MLAs submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office and the Union Home Ministry in New Delhi, expressing deep concern over the worsening situation and the growing frustration among the people. While acknowledging that the imposition of President’s Rule was initially seen as a step toward restoring peace, the signatories noted a lack of substantial progress in curbing unrest and returning normalcy to the state. The memorandum highlighted that civil society groups, community leaders, and local organisations have been increasingly vocal in demanding the reinstatement of democratic governance. It also mentioned that public demonstrations, including rallies and corner meetings, have intensified across Manipur, with citizens blaming their elected representatives for not taking proactive steps to form a government."There is a rising sense of discontent and insecurity among the public, and they are holding us accountable for the current political vacuum," the MLAs stated. They further assured the central leadership that if a government is reinstated, they are committed to working with sincerity and unity to bring peace and rebuild trust among communities. The appeal was endorsed by legislators from various constituencies, including Lourembam Rameshwor (Keirao), Md Ashab Uddin (Jiribam), J Kumo Sha (Karong), Kh Raghumani (Uripok), and L Losii Dikho (Mao), among others. The diverse representation underlines a broad consensus across political lines for a return to elected rule. This development underscores the growing political and public pressure on the central government to end President’s Rule and initiate steps toward re-establishing democratic order in the strife-torn state of Manipur.
