New Delhi: Indian Women’s Hockey Team forward Deepika has etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian player to win the coveted Poligras Magic Skill Award, Hockey India announced in a press release.

The 21-year-old forward earned this global honour after fans across the world voted for her sensational solo goal against World No. 1 Netherlands during the Bhubaneswar leg of the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League. With India trailing 0-2, Deepika delivered a moment of brilliance in the 35th minute — darting past Dutch defenders along the left flank, dribbling along the baseline, flicking the ball over a stick, and firing it past the goalkeeper. India later went on to win the match in a shootout after a 2-2 draw.

The Poligras Magic Skill Award celebrates the most creative and skilful moments in the Pro League and is based entirely on fan votes. Deepika’s goal was shortlisted alongside Spain’s Patricia Alvarez and the Australian women’s team, but the Indian forward emerged as the fan favourite. The men's award was won by Belgium's Victor Wegnez.

Reacting to the honour, Deepika said, “I am truly honoured to have won this award. Scoring that goal against a challenging opponent like the Netherlands was special. I thank my teammates, coaches, family, and friends for their constant support.”

This achievement marks a major milestone for Indian hockey on the global stage.
