Imphal Marks 24th Great Uprising Day with Tributes to 2001 Martyrs
Imphal: Thousands gathered at Kekrupat on Wednesday to observe the 24th Great Uprising Day, commemorating the 18 individuals who lost their lives during the mass movement of June 18, 2001.
The martyrs had died protesting the extension of the ceasefire agreement “without territorial limits” between the Government of India and NSCN (IM), which was widely perceived as a threat to Manipur’s territorial integrity.
The day began with a solemn candlelight tribute, followed by a public meeting where speakers reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding Manipur’s unity. Floral tributes were paid at the memorial site, as people from all walks of life, including civil society groups and families of the martyrs, came together to honour their sacrifice.
Organised jointly by several civil society organisations, the event served as a reminder of the people’s collective resolve to protect the state’s territorial boundaries. The gathering also highlighted the lasting impact of the 2001 movement, which remains a defining moment in Manipur’s modern history.
