Sohra student wins Huayu scholarship for Mandarin Studies
Shillong: Sohra-based student Insan Hamesha Lyndem has been awarded the 2025 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, earning a six-month study opportunity to enhance her Mandarin skills in Taiwan. A graduate of Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), Lyndem began learning Mandarin in 2022 through the Taiwan Education Center at ADBU. After passing the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) in 2023—a certification recognized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education—she became eligible for the scholarship, designed to promote Mandarin language and cultural exchange between Taiwan and countries like India. Lyndem is among four ADBU students from Assam and Manipur to receive the scholarship this year, following recommendations from their Mandarin instructor, Ms. Kuei-Mi Li. The scholarship provides recipients with a monthly stipend of 25,000 New Taiwan Dollars (approximately ₹65,000) to support their studies and stay in Taiwan.She credits ADBU and her instructor for fostering her growth, helping her improve communication, focus, and confidence. On receiving the scholarship, she described feeling “a mixture of excitement, pride, and thankfulness,” viewing it as validation of her hard work. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is part of Taiwan’s initiative to strengthen educational and cultural ties with India through language learning and mutual understanding.
