Assam Police Sets New Benchmark with Over 75% Chargesheet Filing Rate

Guwahati :Assam Police has achieved a major milestone in its crime management and citizen-focused policing efforts, marking a significant step forward in strengthening law enforcement across the state. In the latest monthly crime review meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared encouraging updates that highlight the department's enhanced efficiency and commitment to justice.As of March 2025, Assam Police has successfully chargesheeted 75.5% of the total registered cases, reflecting a robust approach to crime resolution. The performance is even more impressive under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with 80.4% of BNS-related cases chargesheeted. Since the implementation of BNS in July 2024, a total of 19,373 cases under this code have been disposed of, showcasing the swift and structured legal response adopted by the force.The crime data shared during the conference further reveals that a total of 11,747 cases were registered in the state up to March 2025. Of these, 10,387 cases were filed under the BNS, 221 under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and 1,139 cases pertained to special laws and acts. This categorization not only indicates the department's proactive documentation of crimes but also reflects the transition to the updated legal framework.Chief Minister Sarma commended the Assam Police for their diligent efforts and reiterated the government’s support for continuing reforms in policing.
