Baan Theatre Pays Tribute to Natasurya Phani Sharma

Tezpur: The historic Baan Theatre in Tezpur, through its Chandranath-Radhikakanta Memorial Library, hosted a special commemorative event on the occasion of Natasurya Phani Sharma Memorial Day, celebrating the legendary dramatist’s enduring contributions to Assamese literature and theatre. Presided over by Baan Theatre president Bankim Sarma, the programme featured a lecture session titled “Natasurya Phani Sharma’s Contribution to Assamese Literature.” Two emerging scholars—Bikas Sarma from Tezpur University and Mrigakshi Mahanta, a Darrang College alumna—offered compelling insights into Sharma’s vast literary oeuvre. Sarma highlighted the often-overlooked non-dramatic writings of Sharma and emphasized the need for comprehensive publication to engage younger audiences. Mahanta spoke on Sharma’s dramatic craftsmanship, lauding his nuanced character creation and socially conscious storytelling. The event began with a song from a film directed by Phani Sharma, performed by singer Anwesha Kanchan Bora, followed by dramatic readings by Kankan Jyoti Baruah and Rajdeep Bora. Cultural performances by Tanzil Hussain and children added vibrancy to the evening. Prominent attendees included Tezpur Sahitya Sabha president Dhrubajyoti Das and noted playwright Pulak Kumar Dekā, who stressed the relevance of revisiting Sharma’s legacy. Over 25 students participated, reaffirming Baan Theatre’s stature as a vital cultural and intellectual space in Assam.
