Barpeta: The 43rd Barpeta District Day was observed with great enthusiasm and community participation on Tuesday, as the district administration organized a series of official, cultural, and civic programs to mark the occasion. The day began with a floral tribute to the founder of Barpeta, followed by a tree plantation drive led by district officials, symbolizing the district’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The morning activities set a reflective and forward-looking tone for the celebrations. A highlight of the day was a seminar held at 4:00 PM, focusing on Barpeta's socio-political development since it was declared a district on July 1, 1983. Eminent personalities, including scholars, civil servants, and cultural activists, took part in the deliberations. Noted litterateur Akshay Kumar Misra offered insightful suggestions to enrich Barpeta’s cultural and social environment, underlining the need to preserve the district’s rich heritage while embracing progressive development. Various cultural and social organisations also contributed to the festivities, with major events held at the District Library. In the evening, the district was bathed in light as citizens across Barpeta lit lamps in a symbolic gesture of unity and remembrance. Government offices were decorated and illuminated, adding to the festive atmosphere. The celebrations reached a crescendo with a captivating stage performance of the acclaimed play ‘Satta’, presented by Assam Natya Sanmilan, Dakshin Barpeta Branch. Directed by noted theatre personality Satyen Das, the play drew an enthusiastic audience and highlighted the region's vibrant theatrical tradition. District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, IAS, who supervised the day’s proceedings, addressed the public with a message of unity and progress. He lauded the contributions of individuals across various government departments—police, education, social welfare, and others—by presenting them with certificates of recognition for their exemplary public service. "Barpeta’s strength lies in its people—diverse, resilient, and united. Let us continue to build a district that upholds harmony, cultural pride, and inclusive development," the District Commissioner said in his address. Since its establishment as a separate district in 1983, Barpeta District Day has evolved into a significant occasion that blends civic pride with cultural expression. This year’s celebrations stood as a testament to the district’s journey and its aspirations for a brighter future.
