Bohagi Festival in Ledo cancelled amid Indo-Pak tensions

Margherita, May 9: The much-anticipated two-day Bohagi Festival, scheduled to commence today at the Ledo Railway Rangamanch under the 83rd Margherita Constituency, has been officially cancelled. The decision was taken in response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, which have cast a shadow over public celebrations across the region. In an official announcement, the Ledo Bohagi Festival Celebration Committee stated that the cultural festivities would be replaced by a solemn condolence meeting to honor the Indian soldiers and innocent civilians who have lost their lives amid the growing hostilities at the border. This development follows an urgent appeal by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier today, urging the suspension of all remaining Bihu celebrations throughout the state from May 10 onward. In a message shared on social media, Sarma said, “Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their participation and contributions.” The Chief Minister’s appeal comes in the wake of alarming incidents reported along the India-Pakistan border, including explosions in parts of Jammu on the night of May 8. The situation, described by officials as war-like, has prompted widespread concern and led several state authorities to adopt precautionary measures. The Bohagi Festival, a local highlight that marks the Assamese New Year with vibrant performances and community gatherings, had drawn significant anticipation. However, organizers emphasized the need to prioritize national security and solidarity over festivity during these challenging times. Locals in Margherita have expressed both disappointment and understanding, acknowledging the importance of standing united in grief and respect during a period of national uncertainty.
