CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates District Jails in Chirang and Baksa

Chirang/Baksa: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated two newly constructed district jails at Chirang and Baksa in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to bolster infrastructure in the region. The CM first inaugurated the district jail at Kajalgaon in Chirang, built at a cost of ₹72.79 crore. With a capacity to house 500 inmates — including 352 males and 138 females in separate facilities — the jail is equipped with modern administrative and inmate amenities. Later in the day, he inaugurated the district jail at Mushalpur in Baksa, constructed at ₹53.86 crore, also with a 500-inmate capacity. Speaking at Kajalgaon, Sarma highlighted Chirang's gradual development into a fully-fledged district, stating that collaborative efforts by the state government and BTC administration are empowering it with vital infrastructure. He underscored Chirang’s strategic importance in light of the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan, and noted road and rail projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic growth. At Mushalpur, Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to balanced development across all five districts of BTR. He noted that construction of the Baksa DC office has reached 40% completion, while the district stadium is progressing swiftly. “The BTR has seen both peace and progress in recent years, becoming a symbol of harmony among diverse communities,” Sarma said. The event was attended by Minister UG Brahma, Minister Rupesh Gowala, BTC Chief Pramod Boro, and other senior officials.
