Gauhati University Urged to Lead India’s Academic Renaissance

Guwahati :At the 32nd convocation of Gauhati University, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya emphasized the institution’s pivotal role in advancing India’s academic aspirations and reestablishing the nation as a global leader in knowledge, or 'Vishwaguru'. He called on the university to take the lead in forging collaborations with both national and international academic institutions to elevate the country’s educational stature.Governor Acharya highlighted the need for collective efforts to transform India into an intellectual powerhouse and urged Gauhati University to actively build partnerships with premier institutions such as IITs and NITs. Applauding the university for its progressive initiatives, he praised its pioneering implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the Northeast and its embrace of digital platforms like e-Samarth to enhance academic operations.“The National Education Policy is a blueprint for India's educational resurgence, and Gauhati University is well positioned to be a catalyst in achieving its vision,” said Acharya. He encouraged students to actively contribute toward India’s transformation into a global education hub.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also addressed the gathering, inspiring the graduates to harness the opportunities presented by a rapidly transforming Assam. He spoke of the state’s growing potential in diverse sectors such as semiconductors, information technology, green energy, and eco-tourism. “Assam today is a land of promise, no longer dependent, but a proud contributor to India’s growth,” Sarma said.To bolster the university’s development, the Chief Minister announced a phased financial grant of ₹250 crore. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating avenues for young talents to build their futures within Assam.During the ceremony, 3,744 degrees were conferred upon graduating students. Distinguished personalities were also honored, including oncologist Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, who received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree, while Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and renowned oncologist Dr. Tapan Kumar Saikia were conferred with Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degrees.The convocation marked a significant moment for the university and reflected Assam’s growing ambition in the national academic landscape.
