Guwahati :The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has reported a landmark performance in the financial year 2024–25, achieving record-breaking sales and revenue. A total of 169.13 million kilograms of tea were auctioned at an impressive average price of ₹227.70 per kg, resulting in a staggering turnover of ₹3,851 crore. This marks a significant leap from the previous fiscal year, which saw 166.34 million kg sold at an average price of ₹183.20 per kg. “The average price has increased by ₹44.50 per kg, underlining the growing demand and quality standards of Assam teas,” said Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association.A standout moment of the season was the record ₹751 per kg fetched by a premium line of Hookmool teas. Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs) also enjoyed robust demand, with Bejopathar teas selling at ₹471 per kg. Among the top performers were BLFs from Assam’s Dhemaji district, which commanded the highest prices among all districts.GTAC’s success is also attributed to its cost-efficiency. According to Bihani, it offers the lowest cost of selling tea compared to other auction centres in India. “This affordability, combined with quality and transparency, is drawing more sellers to the platform,” he added. In addition to traditional auctions, GTAC is actively promoting single-origin Assam teas through its in-house tea lounge. Located on the auction centre premises, the lounge enables producers to sell directly to consumers, enhancing both brand recognition and profit margins. The lounge has also emerged as a popular tourist spot, generating over ₹1 crore in turnover from retail and promotional sales during FY25.Assam remains a tea powerhouse, contributing nearly 50% of India’s total tea output with an annual production of around 700 million kg. The region primarily produces CTC and orthodox teas, with dust-grade teas making up roughly a quarter of the output.GTAC’s remarkable growth underscores its vital role in supporting Assam’s tea economy and enhancing the global reputation of Indian teas.
