Guwahati:Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam on September 8 to mark a momentous occasion—the commencement of birth centenary celebrations of the legendary cultural icon and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. His visit will also coincide with the inauguration and foundation laying of several transformative projects aimed at bolstering Assam’s infrastructure and sustainability goals.The visit was officially confirmed following Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s meeting with the Prime Minister in New Delhi on April 19. During the meeting, CM Sarma formally extended an invitation to Modi to be the chief guest at the opening ceremony honoring Dr. Hazarika’s enduring legacy.Among the major highlights of the upcoming visit is the inauguration of the Assam Bio-Ethanol Plant, a landmark initiative in the state’s green energy mission. Designed to produce 49 KTPA of ethanol using 300 KTPA bamboo as raw material, the plant aims to enhance rural livelihoods while promoting renewable energy solutions.In addition to this, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to lay the foundation stones for two major infrastructure ventures: the Guwahati Ring Road, a massive Rs 5,700 crore project intended to ease urban traffic congestion, and the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, which will significantly expand access to healthcare in the region."It was my privilege to meet Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji in New Delhi today," CM Sarma wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressing his gratitude and excitement about the upcoming visit.The Prime Minister’s acceptance of the invitation underlines the Centre’s support for Assam’s cultural pride and developmental aspirations. His presence on September 8 is expected to lend national prominence to both the centenary celebration of a musical legend and the unveiling of key projects shaping the future of Assam.This visit is anticipated to draw national attention and public participation, highlighting Assam’s growing importance in India’s cultural and developmental narrative.
