Storm wreaks havoc at school in West Karbi Anglong

West Karbi Anglong: A sudden and powerful storm struck Jengkha Green English ME School in Jengkha Rongpi Arong on Tuesday, triggering panic and chaos as students scrambled for safety. The storm, which swept through the area under the jurisdiction of Kheroni Police Station, caused extensive damage to the school’s infrastructure and disrupted normal life in surrounding areas. According to eyewitnesses, strong winds began lashing the region around midday, intensifying rapidly and catching many off guard. At the school, tin roofing sheets were ripped off by the violent gusts, exposing classrooms to the open sky and forcing teachers and students to evacuate the premises immediately. “It was terrifying. The wind picked up suddenly, and within minutes the roof was gone. We rushed the children out as quickly as we could,” said a school staff member. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, although the psychological impact on the students and staff was significant. Many parents rushed to the school after hearing about the incident, some in tears, relieved to find their children safe. The storm also left its mark on other parts of the West Karbi Anglong District, damaging homes, uprooting trees, and disrupting power supply in several localities. Local authorities have begun assessing the full extent of the damage and have assured that relief measures will be provided where necessary. District officials and the education department have been urged to review the structural integrity of school buildings in the region, especially with the onset of the pre-monsoon season. “This incident highlights the urgent need for disaster-resilient infrastructure in schools to ensure the safety of our children during extreme weather events,” said a concerned local resident. Emergency response teams and police personnel from Kheroni have been deployed to monitor the situation and assist in recovery efforts. Further updates are awaited as the damage assessment continues.
