Jorhat: In a major crackdown on medical fraud, Jorhat Police have arrested two individuals accused of posing as qualified doctors and illegally practicing medicine in the heart of the city for several years. The accused, identified as Ashok Kumar Gogoi and Amar Jyoti Nath, had been operating a private clinic on Old Abart Bhawan Road, raising serious concerns over regulatory lapses.

Locals, unaware of their deception, had nicknamed the duo the "Munna Bhai duo," drawing parallels to the Bollywood character known for impersonating a doctor. Officials revealed that Ashok Kumar Gogoi initially ran a homeopathy clinic at the site but gradually began practicing allopathic medicine without any formal qualifications. His associate, Amar Jyoti Nath, falsely claimed to be a certified MBBS doctor and posed as a medicine specialist.

The fraud came to light after multiple medical representatives noticed irregularities in their prescriptions and treatment approaches. A formal complaint was submitted to the Joint Director of Health Services, prompting a departmental inquiry. Upon investigation, the Health Department verified the lack of valid credentials and immediately ordered the closure of their clinic.

Following the directive, Jorhat Police swiftly arrested both individuals late that night. They have been booked under relevant sections for impersonation and unauthorized medical practice. The incident has triggered calls for stricter monitoring of private medical practitioners in the region.
