Trump Celebrates Senate Breakthrough on Economic Package

Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday celebrated a key procedural win in the Senate for his sweeping economic package, calling it a “GREAT VICTORY” and a major step toward passing his “GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL.”
The Senate voted 51-49 late Saturday to open debate on the nearly 940-page legislation, which includes major tax cuts, deep spending reductions, and increased funding for immigration enforcement. While most Republicans supported the motion, two GOP senators sided with Democrats in opposing the measure. Vice President JD Vance was present in the chamber to cast a tie-breaking vote if needed.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform shortly after the vote, crediting Senators Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson, and Cynthia Lummis for backing the bill. “TONIGHT WE SAW A GREAT VICTORY IN THE SENATE WITH THE GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL,” he posted.
The bill, introduced late Friday, is set for a weekend of debate and amendments. If it passes the Senate, it will return to the House of Representatives for a final vote before heading to the White House for Trump’s signature. The administration is aiming to finalize the legislation before July 4.
Despite Republican control of both chambers, the bill faces internal criticism—especially over proposed cuts to Medicaid and food stamp programs meant to offset the bill’s $3.8 trillion cost.
“The White House strongly supports passage,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune. “IT’S TIME TO GET THIS LEGISLATION ACROSS THE FINISH LINE.”
