Indian Railways Unveils Transformative Vision with 1,000 New Trains and Bullet Train by 2027

New Delhi: Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined a bold roadmap to revolutionize Indian Railways, focusing on infrastructure modernization, sustainable freight, and global competitiveness.
A major highlight is the introduction of 1,000 new trains over five years and the launch of India’s first Bullet Train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by 2027. Developed in collaboration with Japan, the project is progressing rapidly, with the first prototype expected by 2026. Notable milestones include the completion of the Daman Ganga River Bridge in Gujarat, one of 21 major river bridges on the route.
Vaishnaw noted that Indian Railways is undergoing its biggest transformation in 170 years, having added 35,000 km of network in 11 years—matching global giants like Germany. In the past year alone, the Railways laid 5,300 km of new track and manufactured 30,000 wagons and 1,500 locomotives, outpacing North America and Europe.
The sector has seen an investment boom, with the annual budget rising from ₹25,000 crore to ₹2.52 lakh crore, bolstered by ₹20,000 crore in PPP funding.
Freight logistics remain a priority, with rail offering over 50% lower cost per tonne-km than road and 95% more eco-friendly, aligning with India's climate goals.
The vision includes urban rail growth, de-carbonization, and setting global standards in sustainable mobility—positioning Indian Railways as a world leader in green transport infrastructure.
