UPI Transactions Reach New Milestone in May 2025

New Delhi: The digital payments landscape in India continues to surge, with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions hitting an all-time high in May 2025. According to the latest data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the total volume and value of UPI transactions have reached unprecedented levels, reflecting the growing adoption and reliance on digital payment systems across the country.In May, UPI recorded a staggering 18.68 billion transactions in volume, amounting to a total value of ₹25.14 trillion. These figures represent a significant increase from April’s performance, which saw 17.89 billion transactions valued at ₹23.95 trillion. The month-on-month (M-o-M) growth stands at 4% in transaction volume and 5% in transaction value.The year-on-year (Y-o-Y) comparison is even more remarkable, with a 33% increase in volume and a 23% rise in value compared to May 2024. This surge reflects the rapid digital transformation in payment behaviors and the success of UPI as a dominant mode of transaction in India.The previous record for UPI transactions was set in March 2025, when the platform handled 18.3 billion transactions worth ₹24.77 trillion. The May 2025 numbers have now eclipsed these figures, underscoring the continuous upward trajectory of the digital payment ecosystem.Daily UPI transactions also experienced growth, rising from 596 million in April to 602 million in May 2025. The daily transaction value increased from ₹79,831 crore to ₹81,106 crore during this period, highlighting increased usage intensity.The Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) platform, another crucial component of India’s digital payments framework, recorded 464 million transactions in May 2025, marking a 3% growth over April’s 449 million transactions. The value of IMPS transactions also rose by 3%, from ₹6.22 trillion in April to ₹6.41 trillion in May.However, when compared year-on-year, IMPS volumes were down by 17%, though the value increased by 6%. Daily transaction volume saw a slight dip from 14.98 million in April to 14.96 million in May, with daily value marginally decreasing from ₹20,722 crore to ₹20,673 crore.The FASTag system, widely used for electronic toll payments on highways, also experienced growth in May 2025. The number of FASTag transactions increased by 5% month-on-month, reaching 404 million transactions, up from 383 million in April. Transaction value jumped 4%, from ₹6,801 crore to ₹7,087 crore.Comparing May 2025 to May 2024, FASTag transactions were up 16% in volume and 20% in value. Daily transactions increased from 12.75 million to 13.05 million, with daily value rising slightly from ₹227 crore to ₹229 crore.The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) also recorded impressive growth in May. Transaction volume surged by 11% from 95 million in April to 105 million in May 2025. The transaction value rose 8%, from ₹26,618 crore in April to ₹28,703 crore in May.On a daily basis, AePS transactions increased from 3.18 million to 3.37 million, with daily value rising from ₹887 crore to ₹926 crore. Compared to the same period last year, AePS volumes increased by 16% and values by 23%, indicating expanding adoption of biometric-based payments in India.
