Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy unveiled before Test series opener

New Delhi: The historic Test rivalry between England and India will now be symbolised by a new series trophy named after Sir James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, jointly unveiled by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will debut during the upcoming five-Test series has started 20 June 2025 at Headingley, Leeds.This new trophy pays tribute to two of Test cricket’s most revered figures, marking a new chapter in one of the game’s most intense rivalries. Previously, the two nations competed for different trophies depending on location- the Pataudi Trophy in England and the Anthony De Mello Trophy in India.While the previous series trophies are being retired, the legacy of Indian cricketing royalty will endure. The Pataudi family will now be honoured through a newly instituted Pataudi Medal, which will be awarded to the winning captain of each England–India Test series, regardless of venue.The new trophy features action imagery and engraved signatures of both Anderson and Tendulkar, celebrating their respective contributions to the longest format of the game.Tendulkar and Anderson hold the record for the most Test appearances in cricket history- 200 matches for the Indian legend and 188 for the English swing maestro.Tendulkar remains the highest run-scorer in Test history, amassing 15,921 runs, while Anderson is the leading fast bowler in terms of wickets, with 704 Test dismissals, third overall behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.Sir James Anderson called the recognition a "proud moment" and highlighted the enduring intensity of India–England contests.The rivalry between our two nations has always been something special... It’s a real honour to be recognised in this way.Tendulkar reflected on the life lessons from the game:Test cricket embodies life... It teaches endurance, discipline, and adaptability. Sharing this honour with James, a fierce competitor and a gentleman, makes it even more special.Both men have been recognised far beyond the boundary rope. Anderson received a knighthood last month for services to cricket.Tendulkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2014.
