Mizoram Tops National Literacy Chart

Aizawl: In a remarkable reflection of the Northeast’s educational progress, five states from the region now rank among India’s ten most literate, according to the 2023–24 Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the government.Mizoram leads the nation with an impressive 98.2% literacy rate, followed closely by Nagaland at 95.7%, securing the third position. Meghalaya claims the fifth spot with 94.2%, Tripura shares sixth place with Chandigarh at 93.7%, and Manipur stands at tenth with 92%.This strong performance highlights a transformative shift in India’s literacy landscape, with the Northeast emerging as a beacon of educational achievement. Mizoram’s consistent focus on education culminated in its recent recognition as the first state to achieve full literacy status under the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) campaign. The declaration was made by Chief Minister Lalduhoma at Mizoram University, celebrating the successful education of over 1,600 adult learners through volunteer-driven efforts.While the Northeast sets new benchmarks, several states continue to grapple with low literacy rates. Andhra Pradesh (72.6%), Bihar (74.3%), and Madhya Pradesh (75.2%) remain at the bottom of the national rankings, highlighting the uneven educational development across the country.The Northeast’s ascent in literacy rankings signals both effective grassroots efforts and the growing impact of targeted learning initiatives, positioning the region as a model for inclusive educational advancement.
