Cop Raj Kumar Sarma plated 1100 saplings in both sides of NH 15
Biswanath Chariali: An Assam Police constable Raj Kumar Sarma employed at 12th AP Battalion, Kusumtola, Jamugurihat has come up with a green challenge this time. The cop started his green mission on June 19 in front of the headquarters of the 12th AP Battalion. Naduar MLA Padma Hazarika inaugurated the noble mission in presence of the officials and staff of 12th AP Battalion, 5 Commando Battalion and the general public. At the initial stage, constable Sarma has chosen the area from the historic Nagsankar Temple to Chowkighat bridge on the Jiya Bharali river covering 15 KMs road. He has planted 1100 medicinal plants such as Mahaneem and Arjun besides the NH 15. Talking to this correspondent, constable Sarma said that he will plant more saplings in the days to come. He has a dream of planting a total of 5000 trees alongside the NH 15 from Chowkighat river to Gohpur town covering 100 KMs. This year he has planted 1100 saplings covering 15 KMs and will plant 3900 plants covering the remaining 85 KMs in the next year. When asked, why has he ventured this mega green initiative? Sarma said that people have deforested the reserves in the name of industrialization and urbanization. But they forget to plant and nurture plants due to which people have experienced drought-like situations, scarcity of rain and spells of scorching heat. He has initiated the mission to set an example of nature conservation. He further added that he would look after each and every plant and shoulder the responsibility to grow each plant. Notably, during this green mission, environmentalist Sarma has exhausted a sum of one lakh twenty three thousand in the name of green plastic net, bamboo post and labour charge.
