Guwahati: Continuous rainfall in the hill regions over the past 48 hours has caused the Kakodonga River to swell, resulting in severe flooding across multiple villages under Borhola Mouza. Several areas along the Jorhat-Golaghat district border—including Athkhelia Bosa and Borkachari—have been badly impacted, with floodwaters breaching embankments at numerous points. The deluge has submerged homes, agricultural lands, and vital infrastructure. In Athkhelia Bosa alone, more than 50 households have been inundated, forcing residents to evacuate. Many displaced families have taken temporary shelter at the Third Bosa Primary School since last night.Despite the scale of the disaster, flood-affected villagers claim that no relief or food assistance has been provided by the district administration, prompting widespread anger and frustration. Residents are demanding immediate action from local authorities to address the crisis.Adding to the tension, locals have blamed unchecked and illegal sand mining in the Kakodonga River near Athkhelia and Borkachari Higher Secondary Schools for weakening the riverbanks. According to villagers, these unauthorised mining activities—allegedly carried out round the clock by sand mafias—played a major role in causing the breaches that led to the current flooding.Meanwhile, Charaideo district has also been hit hard by relentless rain, with heavy downpours from midnight until morning leading to flash floods across several areas. Villages and localities including Mathurapur, Panijan, Gasikola, Deosal, Duwara Gaon, Tengapukhuri, and Thanamukh are now underwater. The flooding has disrupted normal life, submerging roads, courtyards, ponds, and vast swathes of low-lying land. Residents have reported severe difficulties in transportation and daily activities due to the waterlogging. With the monsoon season intensifying, residents across these regions are urging the administration for swift flood relief operations, embankment repair, and stricter action against illegal riverbed mining to prevent future disasters.
