KAAC gears up for Mining review, focuses on regulation and sustainability

Guwahati: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) held a high-level preparatory meeting on Thursday evening to streamline and strengthen governance over mining activities in the Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. The session, convened at the KAAC Secretariat's CEM Block, sets the stage for a comprehensive mining review scheduled for July 7.Presided over by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, the meeting was attended by Executive Members Tiluttoma Hasnu and Prabhat Chandra Taro, Principal Secretary Mukul Kumar Saikia (IAS), senior-most Secretary Si-im Taro, various departmental secretaries, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of the Council, along with senior officials from the mining, forest, and environment departments.The key focus of the meeting was to gather updated data, evaluate the current status of mining operations, and ensure better coordination between departments. Discussions also revolved around enhancing regulatory mechanisms and promoting sustainable, transparent mining practices to protect the region’s ecological balance.The agenda included a critical assessment of ongoing mining activities, evaluation of compliance with existing laws, and consideration of new guidelines that prioritize eco-friendly approaches to resource extraction. Inter-departmental cooperation and improved monitoring frameworks were also highlighted as essential steps toward more effective oversight.CEM Tuliram Ronghang reiterated the Council's commitment to lawful and responsible mining, underscoring the importance of aligning economic growth with environmental preservation and community welfare. “We must ensure that mining contributes to the region’s development without compromising our natural resources or the rights of local communities,” Ronghang stated.The Council aims to strike a balance between leveraging mineral resources for development and safeguarding the ecological heritage of Karbi Anglong.
