Darrang: In a strong message against corruption and negligence, Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika announced strict action during an on-site inspection of a key flood protection embankment project in Sareng, Darrang district. The 19.65-km embankment, built on both sides of the Dimila River, aims to connect Sareng with Duikhutimukh as part of the state’s broader flood and erosion mitigation efforts. However, local complaints of irregularities prompted the Minister to conduct a field visit. After inspecting the site, Hazarika found significant lapses and substandard construction, leading him to order the suspension of the Executive Engineer and direct legal action against the contractor, based on public feedback. “We won’t tolerate negligence when it comes to protecting lives,” he said. “As envisioned by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, we’re building a corruption-free Assam with full accountability in public works.” The inspection was attended by MLA Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi, the Darrang Deputy Commissioner, and Water Resources officials. Later, the Minister reviewed another 5-km embankment project from Chereng Ghat PWD Road to Niz Rangamati. While satisfied with the completed stretch, he urged officials to speed up the remaining work and maintain high standards. He also announced the installation of sluice gates in the next phase to improve water flow control during the monsoon. MLA Basanta Das, senior engineers, and local administrators joined the review, with the Minister emphasizing community involvement and inter-departmental coordination as key to project success.
