Silchar Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Dumping
Silchar: In a firm push to restore civic discipline and promote cleanliness in the town’s core areas, the Silchar Municipal Corporation carried out a surprise inspection at Itkhola Bazar under Ward No. 3 on Saturday morning, catching several residents red-handed while dumping household waste along the roadside. The bustling market area, a vital commercial hub in Silchar, has for weeks struggled with mounting piles of rotting garbage, dumped indiscriminately by locals despite repeated appeals and warnings from the civic body. Following consistent complaints and reports of violations, a team of Corporation officials conducted an unannounced early morning visit, resulting in the on-the-spot apprehension of multiple individuals engaged in illegal waste disposal. Civic officials promptly served notices to the offenders and issued stern warnings that repeat violations would incur a penalty of ₹2000, in line with Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines. Officials also took the opportunity to sensitize the public about the health hazards posed by such unhygienic practices, urging residents to use door-to-door garbage collection services and properly marked disposal bins. The Corporation’s intervention triggered a wave of reactions from the local populace. While many bystanders welcomed the move and called it long overdue, others appeared uneasy and quietly retreated from the area. Several shopkeepers and passers-by came forward to pledge their support for the ongoing cleanliness campaign, promising to discourage irresponsible behavior among their peers and customers. As the operation concluded, officials left the site with a clear and firm message: a clean and livable Silchar is a collective responsibility. Their resounding slogan, “Public spaces are for all, not for garbage — act responsibly,” echoed through the market lanes, leaving a lasting impression on those present.
