Tezpur: Tezpur University played a pivotal role in formulating a roadmap on "Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions – Fostering an Inclusive and Equitable Environment" at the recently held Vice Chancellors' Conference in Kevadia, Gujarat. The high-level conference, attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission, and Vice Chancellors from Central Universities, focused on key themes of teaching, research, and governance across ten thematic sessions. Tezpur University, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, coordinated discussions for the fifth group, comprising Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh, and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak. Prof. Singh emphasized challenges hindering equity in higher education and proposed transformative initiatives to bridge systemic gaps. Notably, Tezpur University was the only institution from the Northeast to lead a session. Prof. Singh highlighted three pillars of equity: access, participation and experience, and outcomes. Despite expansion, higher education in India remains marked by disparities across geography, society, economy, and gender. The annual VC Conference serves as a key platform for policy dialogue and reform.
