Violent Infighting Rocks UPPL Ahead of BTC Polls

Chirang: Tensions escalated in Gorubhasa, Chirang district, late Monday night as violent clashes broke out between rival factions of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), leaving senior leader and Village Council Development Committee (VCDC) President Bipul Mushahary seriously injured. According to reports, a group of primary-level UPPL workers allegedly assaulted Mushahary at his residence following an argument. His wife, Sanchumoi Mushahary, claimed the attackers brandished a pistol, issued death threats, and fled after the assault. Mushahary, who suffered head and body injuries, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bongaigaon. Shockingly, a second attack reportedly took place shortly after at the UPPL’s local party office when Mushahary attempted to report the incident to senior leaders. Eyewitnesses stated that no one present intervened during the assault. The situation has grown more complex as counter-allegations surfaced, accusing Mushahary of threatening party workers with a machete. Police at Gorubhasa Outpost are yet to officially register an FIR due to clerical issues, though they have confirmed that the complaint will be corrected and registered. The complaint names Shubharaj, Kabul, Brahmajit, Birbal, Doidoin, Jayanta Basumatary, and Phakhan Narzary as the accused. The clash appears linked to a recent public dispute between Mushahary and Shubharaj Basumatary that circulated on social media, deepening internal rifts within the UPPL ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council elections.
