Workshop on "Reading, Writing and Drawing 'Sanchipatiya Puthi" concludes

North Lakhimpur: “Heritage is the true identity of a community. The prestige of the community will be existing only when we will learn how to preserve our heritage." This statement was made by Dr. Sangita Gogoi, the Director in charge of the Directorate of History and Archaeological Studies under the Government of Assam. She said so while taking part in the inaugural session of a workshop, organized on "Reading, Writing and Drawing Old Assamese Books" by the Directorate of History and Archaeological Studies at North Lakhimpur College from July 3 to July 7. In connection, she added that we must practice the Indian knowledge system properly to establish its importance in addition to being proud of it. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Department of Assamese of North Lakhimpur College and it was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia. Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Department of Assamese and coordinator of the workshop, delivered the welcome address. The inaugural session of the workshop was also attended by Banikanta Konwar, Academic Coordinator, North Lakhimpur College and Namrata Kakati, Research Officer, Directorate of History and Archaeological Studies, Government of Assam. The training of the workshop was conducted by Dhananjit Talukdar of Guwahati University who taught how to read the old Assamese script styles and then held a session of practice for reading many types of Assamese inscriptions. On the other hand, artiste-cum-researcher Mridu Mousam Borah conducted training on how to write and draw 'Sanchipatiya Puthi'. Renowned artist Borah taught the participants how to prepare Sanchipat, make ink and draw on them through practical teaching. A total of 50 students participated in the workshop. Each of them acquired the skills to read the Sanchipatiya Puthi of the Assamese language. They also become proficient in writing and drawing on them. All the participants were awarded certificate of participation at the closing ceremony of the workshop. The workshop organized by the Directorate of History and Archaeological Studies under the Government of Assam has attracted attention at a time when there are rampant complaints that the upcoming generations have no interest towards the heritage of the community. Coordinator Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa thanked the Directorate of History and Archaeological Studies, Government of Assam and Director in charge Dr. Sangeeta Gogoi for organizing this workshop for the benefit of the students of Lakhimpur.
