Blaze in Central Kolkata Hotel Claims 14 Lives, Investigation Underway

Kolkata: A devastating fire broke out at the Rituraj Hotel in the Machhua area near Falpatti, Central Kolkata, on the evening of April 29, leaving at least 14 people dead and several others injured or trapped. The fire reportedly started around 8:15 p.m., prompting an immediate response from the fire brigade and emergency services.Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, while addressing the media at the scene, confirmed the recovery of 14 bodies from the burned structure. He assured that the blaze had been brought under control and added, “Rescue operations are ongoing. A special investigation team has been constituted to determine the cause of the fire.”While the source of the fire has yet to be identified, authorities are investigating all possibilities, including whether fire safety regulations were breached. The incident has raised serious concerns about the enforcement of fire safety norms in the city’s commercial buildings.The tragedy has triggered a wave of political responses. West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed condolences on social media and urged the state administration to act swiftly in assisting the victims and their families. “Immediate rescue, medical aid, and humanitarian support must be provided. A thorough audit of fire safety standards across Kolkata is now essential,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).Meanwhile, West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar criticized the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, accusing it of negligence. Speaking to ANI, Sarkar remarked, “This is a heartbreaking event. Many people are still stuck inside. There were no safety measures in place. The municipal authorities must be held accountable.”The incident has once again brought fire safety lapses into the spotlight, raising questions about the preparedness and oversight of municipal authorities in preventing such tragedies.
