Rishabh Pant goes heads-on with Umpire:May face sanctions after animated act

New Delhi: India ended Day 3 with a second innings score of 90/2 against England during the first Test at Headingley in Leeds. The hosts were just inches away from taking a lead before they got dismissed for 465 in response to India's 471.During the third day's play, Rishabh Pant was in the limelight, but for all the wrong reasons. It is likely that the Indian wicketkeeper batter may face ICC sanctions over a rift with Umpire Paul Reiffel. In the 61st over of England's innings, batter Harry Brook hit Mohammed Siraj for a boundary over slips. This led to a dissatisfied Pant approaching the umpire for a ball inspection. Though there was no problem with the ball despite an examination with a ball gauge, Pant was adamant for a ball change. As soon as the umpire made his decision and handed over the ball to Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper threw the ball backhanded which prompted boos from the Headingley crowd.Pant's animated act may have violated Article 2.8 and 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. While Article 2.8 is about a player's dissent followed by an umpire's decision, which is classified as a Level 1 or a Level 2 offence, Article 2.9 is about throwing the ball towards or near the umpire in an inappropriate manner. After India posted 471 on the board, England scored 465 with Ollie Pope (106) and Harry Brook (99) top-scoring for their side. Many batters contributed to England's total which powered them to a respectable total but fell short of India's first innings score. In the second innings, England drew first blood after they dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) early and Sai Sudharsan for 30 runs.KL Rahul (47*) and Indian skipper Shubman Gill (6*) will start the day's play aiming to establish a massive lead on the board against their counterparts.
