Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the transformative potential of Geographical Indication (GI) and origin-based products in generating income and empowering communities in the North East. She praised AVACreations Social Impact Foundation for its pivotal role in linking these unique regional goods to national markets, especially benefitting forest-dependent women entrepreneurs.

During the inauguration of the IICA North East Conclave 2025 at IIM Shillong, Sitharaman interacted with Arup Kumar Baishya, Co-founder and COO of AVACreations. The exhibition, organized by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), showcased impactful initiatives promoting sustainable livelihoods, green economy, and cultural preservation.

Baishya briefed the Minister on AVACreations’ efforts to empower artisans through entrepreneurial training and market access. He highlighted collaborations with NABARD, Central Silk Board, and DC Handlooms, which support alternative livelihoods for women, reducing dependency on forest resources.

Proposing the establishment of dedicated Heritage Emporiums for GI products, Baishya emphasized the need for government-backed market platforms to ensure steady income for artisans.

Impressed by the initiative, Sitharaman endorsed the Heritage Emporium concept and urged banks and development finance institutions to actively support such community-driven models for inclusive growth.
