CoRRP Announces Second Phase of Protest Demanding

Kohima: The Committee on Review Reservation Policy (CoRRP), representing five major Naga tribes, has announced the resumption of its agitation, declaring a sit-in protest at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima on July 9. This marks the second phase of the movement demanding a comprehensive review of the state’s job reservation policy, which has been in place since 1977. The CoRRP – comprising tribal bodies of the Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi communities – stated that the decades-old policy no longer reflects the present socio-economic and educational realities of various communities in the state. The collective push for reform gained momentum after the five tribes jointly submitted a memorandum to the state government earlier this year. On June 3, following a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton, the government had assured the formation of a commission to address the matter by June 17. However, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, on July 3, clarified that the commission's task is complex and cannot yield immediate results. He further stated that any major reforms, including those related to job reservations, should be undertaken only after the upcoming national census, expected in 2027. Dissatisfied with the delay, CoRRP has decided to relaunch its protest. “It will be a one-day protest for now. We’ll observe the government’s response and take further steps accordingly,” said CoRRP member-secretary G. K. Zhimomi. The first phase of agitation was suspended on June 3 following government assurances.
