Assam CM Vows Aggressive Eviction Drive to Reclaim Land
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reaffirmed his government’s uncompromising stance on illegal land encroachments, announcing a fresh wave of eviction drives aimed at reclaiming land for the state’s indigenous communities. Addressing reporters, Sarma declared, “Every inch of encroached land will be reclaimed.” In an emotionally charged statement, the Chief Minister said, “I'm addicted to protecting our lands. Every Assamese must rise to reclaim what's rightfully ours. I am addictively committed to reclaiming illegally encroached forest and wetlands and returning them to our people.” Sarma further asserted that intensified eviction operations can be expected over the coming month. “I am fully determined—there will be no compromise on this,” he said, reinforcing the government’s hardline approach. The Chief Minister also invoked history to underline the scale of his administration’s efforts. “In Assam’s history, after Bishnuram Medhi, I am the only Chief Minister to have reclaimed such vast land from illegal encroachments,” he remarked, drawing parallels with one of Assam’s most remembered post-independence leaders known for his firm governance. The renewed push signals a significant political message ahead of crucial administrative and legislative milestones. While the government frames these actions as necessary to uphold the rights of indigenous people, past eviction drives have drawn criticism over humanitarian concerns and alleged lack of rehabilitation measures. The statement is expected to spark renewed debate across political and civil society spheres, as Assam continues to grapple with the complex issues of land rights, identity, and demographic shifts.
