Cachar District Observes 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Silchar: The Cachar District Administration on Sunday commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee with a solemn programme at the Old Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, honouring the legacy of the nationalist who championed the ideal of "Ek Desh, Ek Samvidhan" (One Nation, One Constitution). The event began with floral tributes led by Norsing Bey, ACS, District Development Commissioner, along with eminent personalities including Atin Das, noted writer and CM’s Awardee, and Dr. Gangesh Bhattacharjee, Head of the History Department at Jagannath Singh College, Udharbond. Several senior officers and dignitaries from various departments also paid homage. In his welcome address, Hemanga Navis, ACS, Additional District Commissioner, highlighted the ongoing relevance of Dr. Mookerjee’s vision for national unity and integrity. Delivering the keynote address, Atin Das hailed Dr. Mookerjee as a "fearless architect of India’s destiny", recalling his principled resignation from the Nehru Cabinet over Kashmir and his strong stand against communalism. Das emphasized Dr. Mookerjee’s enduring legacy as a reformer, scholar, and defender of national unity. Dr. Gangesh Bhattacharjee, in a scholarly address, traced Dr. Mookerjee’s journey from being the youngest Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University to becoming a pillar of Indian politics. He noted his critical role in shaping India’s industrial, educational, and constitutional foundations, and lauded his martyrdom for the cause of national integration. In his closing remarks, Norsing Bey urged attendees to draw inspiration from Dr. Mookerjee’s life of courage and service. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the district's commitment to uphold the ideals of one of India’s greatest patriots.
