CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Stands Firm on Aminul Islam's Arrest Over Pro-Pakistan Remarks
Guwahati:Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly defended the arrest of AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam, emphasizing that he would not hesitate to take similar actions again if needed. Islam was detained for allegedly making remarks that seemed supportive of Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.Speaking on the crackdown, Sarma said, "Several individuals have been arrested for issuing pro-Pakistan statements. Aminul Islam is one among them. I will not hesitate to act again if such incidents repeat." His comments underline the state government's zero-tolerance approach toward any expressions seen as sympathetic to Pakistan. On Friday, a local court in Assam’s Nagaon district ordered a four-day police custody for Islam after he was presented before the judge. The police action followed a viral video where Islam allegedly defended the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack. Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka confirmed that police took immediate action after reviewing the video, leading to the MLA's arrest under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).Through a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma shared the names of others arrested for similar offenses, including individuals from Hailakandi, Silchar, Morigaon, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. Those arrested include Md. Jabir Hussain, Md. A.K. Bahauddin, Md. Javed Mazumder, Md. Mahahar Mia, Md. Mujihirul Islam, and Md. Sahil Ali. Further arrests are ongoing as the crackdown intensifies. In another update, Sarma reported two additional arrests — Md. Jarif Ali from Barpeta and Anil Bania from Biswanath — both accused of spreading anti-national sentiments. The Assam Police have made it clear that any attempts to support or glorify terrorist activities or Pakistan will be met with stringent legal action, reinforcing the state's commitment to maintaining internal security and national integrity.
