Golakganj police foil riverine cow smuggling attempt

Dhubri: In a swift and strategic crackdown, Golakganj police in Assam’s Dhubri district foiled a cross-border cow smuggling attempt via the Gangadhar River, rescuing eight bovines and arresting a suspected smuggler. The operation underscores a shift in smuggling tactics, with traffickers increasingly using riverine routes to evade heightened highway surveillance. Acting on a reliable tip-off, a police team led by Golakganj Police Station In-Charge Debajit Kalita launched an early morning raid on Tuesday. The team intercepted a mechanised boat allegedly used to ferry cattle from West Bengal to Bangladesh through remote riverine islands known as chars. During the operation, police arrested Mofizul Ali Pramanik of Bor Saraikhola village, believed to be a key supplier. In a parallel raid at Ghughumari Char in Moisa Char, another team seized eight illegally transported cows, now under police protection. Authorities suspect smugglers are using isolated char areas near Binnachara as temporary cattle holding spots before attempting border crossings. Police are currently interrogating the arrested suspect to unravel the larger smuggling network. Golakganj police have pledged to intensify their crackdown on cross-border cattle trafficking in the region, ensuring vigilance along both land and river routes.
