Guwahati: In a fiery speech during a campaign rally in North Salmara, Bongaigaon district on May 2, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a blistering attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, making several explosive allegations just days before the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections. While addressing supporters of the NDA alliance, Sarma raised questions about Gogoi’s recent international travels, alleging that the Congress leader had spent over two weeks in Pakistan — a destination Sarma described as lacking any tourist appeal. "Why was he in Pakistan for 15 days? The people of Assam deserve an explanation," Sarma said.Escalating the controversy further, the Chief Minister claimed that three out of four members in Gogoi’s household hold foreign citizenship. “His two children are not Indian citizens. If Gaurav Gogoi can prove otherwise, I am ready to step down as Chief Minister,” Sarma declared. He also alleged that Gogoi’s family draws income from Pakistan while residing in India, questioning the source of their earnings and their allegiance. "Why is income coming from Pakistan if they are living here?" he asked the crowd.Sarma suggested Gogoi had visited Pakistan multiple times, although he admitted certainty about only one trip. In a bizarre twist, he claimed that Gogoi had left his passport behind in Israel, making it difficult to trace other foreign visits. The remarks have caused a significant stir in Assam’s political discourse, with many viewing the comments as part of an intensified war of words in the lead-up to the polls. While the Chief Minister’s statements have drawn sharp attention, the Congress party has not yet officially responded to the allegations. These charges come at a crucial time in the electoral battle, and their impact on public sentiment remains to be seen. As Assam gears up for the last phase of voting, political tensions continue to escalate between the ruling and opposition camps.
