Imphal: Suman Devi Thoudam, a 25-year-old defender from Manipur, has made a remarkable return to the Indian women’s hockey team after a three-year absence. Her selection for the European leg of the FIH Pro League 2024–25 marks a significant milestone in her journey back to international hockey. Hailing from Imphal, Suman last represented India in a Pro League match against the Netherlands in Bhubaneswar in 2022. Following that appearance, she was dropped from the national core group. Undeterred, she continued to train rigorously at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Delhi, sharpening her defensive skills, particularly in tackling and man-to-man marking. Suman, who joined the national setup in 2016, has represented India at both junior and senior levels. Despite her setback in 2022, she remained committed to her development and set her sights firmly on returning stronger. Her perseverance has paid off. Rejoining the national squad now led by Salima Tete, Suman steps into a team that has evolved in structure and leadership. She previously played under former captain Rani and acknowledged the contrasting yet impactful leadership styles of both captains, noting the dynamic shift within the squad. India’s European tour, scheduled from June 14 to June 29, will see them competing in London, Antwerp, and Berlin. They are set to face some of the world’s top teams, including Australia, Argentina, Belgium, and China—each team twice. India will kick off their campaign with a challenging opener against Australia in London. Suman’s return not only adds valuable experience to the squad’s defense but also highlights the importance of resilience and dedication in elite sport. With a demanding international calendar ahead, her comeback is seen as a timely boost to India’s backline. Speaking on her selection, Suman expressed gratitude and determination: “It feels great to be back. I’ve worked hard for this moment, and I’m ready to give my best for the team.” As India prepares for a crucial phase of the FIH Pro League, all eyes will be on Suman to see how her renewed form and focus contribute to the team's performance on the European stage.
