Assam Panchayat Polls Phase 2 Sees 56.71% Voter Turnout
Guwahati, May 7 — The second phase of the panchayat elections in Assam recorded a 56.71% voter turnout by 3:30 PM, according to the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC). Officials expect the final tally to rise as data from polling stations in remote areas is still being compiled and will be available later in the night.
The second phase of polling was held across 13 districts, including Nalbari, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.
Among these, Bongaigaon registered the highest voter turnout at 62.72%, followed by Morigaon (60.51%) and Barpeta (60.22%). Kamrup district recorded the lowest turnout at 51.33%.
Here’s a breakdown of voter turnout in other districts:
Nalbari: 59.45%
South Salmara-Mankachar: 58%
Bajali: 57%
Hojai: 57.65%
Kamrup Metro: 56.84%
Goalpara: 56.22%
Darrang: 53.25%
Dhubri: 52.38%
Nagaon: 51.7%
In contrast, the first phase of polling held on May 2 saw a significantly higher voter turnout of 70.19% across 14 districts, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.
In that phase, Majuli led with 80.02% turnout, followed by Dhemaji (77.14%) and Hailakandi (73.5%). Sonitpur recorded the lowest at 61%.
The Panchayat elections are being seen as a key indicator of grassroots political engagement across Assam.
